If you have a fixed possession date you will have to do an addemdem to your purchase contract. The seller will have to agree. If they are moving to a new home they might not be able to accomadate you unless they can get their possession date changed. Get your realtor working for you.

The agreement of sale is between you and the seller. Not anyone else. So the attorney will not dispute this with you, unless the attorney is either the seller or the POA on behalf of the seller. Are you working w/ an agent? If so, then the agent can go back to the seller’s agent and ask for an addendum. If not, then you need to go refer to the sales agreement. Usually there is a clause on a settlement date. Generally they read like this:
    Settlement will occur on:________________
you can close on or before this date. If the date is specified, then the seller has to agree in writing to extend the closing date.. Most sellers do, as it is better to delay a closing, then call a contract null and in void and find another buyer. Which means more time lost. If the seller agrees all you need is an addendum to be made and attached to the agreement of sale! And this can be done at anytime, even the day OF closing. Just not AFTER the said date of the agreement, UNLESS agreed to by both parties.

as many days as you can. most of the closing paper work is done the 1-2 days before the closing.
does your purchase agreement allow you to move date back without approval from seller?
