Can You Become An Attorney Without Going To Law School?

My friend told me that in California you can take the exam if you complete four years of study with an attorney or judge. Is that true? Is there a website with this information? How do people know this?

Yes you can become an attorney without going to law school. You can meet California’s legal education requirements by spending at least four years studying law under the personal supervision of a California judge of record or a California attorney in his or her law office. (The attorney must be an active member of the State Bar of California who has been in practice for the last five years or longer.) For more detailed information, visit the State Bar’s Web site at http://www.calbar.ca.gov and click on Admissions.

Yes, it’s called “Reading Law” and it’s legal in California, Maine, New Hampshire and Virginia.
I would suggest talking with the California Bar association. You will need to find a lawyer or judge willing to take you on.
Keep in mind that most states do not honor the reading law program so you would be limited to the states that do.
