Call him. Lawyers are notorious for putting things on the back burner because they are always so busy (if they’re any good!) You however don’t want to be put on the back burner so make sure he knows you’re awake and will keep after him.
Of course if he told you it would be weeks before he knew anything you need to give him a chance. If it was me, I’d ‘phone.

Is he a partner in the law firm of Dewey, Skrewem, & Howe?

it all dpends on the type of case, and what instructions you gave him. if it is a claim from some sort of insurance, expect it to be a while-as he will only call when he has news. you are alawys free to call and enquire as to the progress of the case though.

You should call. Ten working days is more than enough. they should give you at least some idea of what’s going on. Most legal cases have a time limit and the sooner you get started on the case the better. Many attorneys take on way more cases than they can honestly, and in a timely manner, handle. Be cautious.

2 weeks tops. They are notorious for not doing anything after they have your money. Then when you call to check, they bill you for that. Good luck, you are going to need it.

That point should have been addressed at the time you engaged the attorney and discussed your case and his plan for your defense a well as costs and his timing in providing those services. My suggestion is find another attorney or at least get a clear understanding of what and when he plans to initiate on your behalf. Good luck!!
